More and more students are choosing to take a master’s degree. For this reason, inquiries about these degrees multiply. One of the most common has to do with the terms that have emerged around the word master. For example, what is the difference between an official master’s degree and your own? An inter university master’s degree is a degree in which teachers from more than one university take part.
Normally, there is a coordinating university and one (or several) collaborating universities, although there may also be guest lecturers from other centers. This practice is carried out both in face-to-face training and in online training. In the first case, it is likely that students must move to both centers to follow the course. In this sense, the division of the teaching load is equitable. Often tasks are divided by semester or by day a week. That is, one semester in the coordinating university and another in the collaborating university. Or two days a week in the coordinating university and two more in the collaborator. Contact with teachers of varied profile. When we leave the race, we know the savoir faire of the professors of our university. However, university master’s degrees allow to expand horizons and approach other ways of working. If one of the two universities is our center of origin, we can maintain the established links during the degree without giving up new options.
Greater knowledge of the university panorama. The university world is very broad. Consequently, four years in the same center offer an incomplete overview of everything we could learn. In this sense, interuniversity masters become the perfect opportunity to contrast and analyze with a critical perspective.
Possibility of expanding the circle of contacts. New teachers, new colleagues … All this contributes to feed our contact agenda, which can be crucial to enter the labor market.
Contact with various research methodologies. Although the university centers are in contact, not all have the same way of guiding the research. That is to say, the intellectual referents and methodologies may vary depending on the tradition and history of the university.
Formative variety in the curriculum. The recruiters of personnel see in the variety a sample of concern and polyvalent look. In this sense, obtaining a university master’s degree can make a difference when choosing, also in cases in which more than one mode of study is combined (online and face-to-face).
5 disadvantages of studying an interuniversity master
Greater amount of displacements. When training is 100% online, it is likely that students will have to travel to more than one center. As a result, more time is wasted and more money is invested in public transport. If the division of the classes is not by semester, the student may manifest a certain sensation of disorientation and exhaustion.
Coordination not very fluid. It would not have to happen, but sometimes the communication between the centers is not as fast as the students would like. This affects aspects such as enrollment, the defense of the TFM, the functioning of the virtual campus, the organization of training activities outside the centers, etc.
Repetitive contents. When one of the universities is the center where we attend the degree, we run the risk of hearing things that we already knew. Why? Very simple: when receiving students from various backgrounds, the university must ensure that all students have similar knowledge. Although it can serve to refresh past lessons, it also helps to fuel boredom.
Difficulty to combine training and work. Moving to two university centers (not always in the same locality) limits the time the student can devote to extracurricular activities. In this sense, it is recommended that, in case of working more than 20 hours per week, the online training is combined with the face-to-face training.
Confusion of roles between the coordinating university and the collaborator. It is the most serious problem of lack of coordination although, fortunately, it is not the most frequent. Sometimes conflicts of interest arise between the centers and one wants to absorb the competences of the other. If a similar situation emerges, it is advisable for students to remain calm and dialogue with both centers through the figure of the delegate. The objective? Learn and take advantage of the course without deconcentration due to external elements.
